Ficlet: Masquerade Ball (Wish Me Luck)

Another of the AU_gust ficlets, this one for the prompt "Masquerade Ball" and also for [community profile] allbingo Crime Classics square "Foreign Bodies." I put 0 research and accuracy into it and the fandom doesn't have enough fic to warrant an AU, but I was thinking about WML when I saw the prompt. Anyway, less traumatic than the actual incident's end in 1.6, one trusts.

(I thought I was doing better today but I just failed at the summary sentence three four FIVE times in a row, so I do hope my editing was actually okay. It was only tweaking, so let's hope so.)

Chicken Jockey from Minnesota!

Something with a bit more humour, because this always makes me laugh:

I first saw this on social media, but most recently I saw [personal profile] conuly post it.

The funniest part is the very deliberate way the announcer says "Chicken Jockey" almost like she can't quite believe what she's reading. (Or, it might just be the Minnesota inflection. I can't tell!)

Amusing point: We are five days into September and I have already written over half of what I wrote in August. August was absolutely a MISERABLE month for writing.

not quite

I spent most of the day in the room, listning to an irregular rumble that never quite seemed to stop...

..around 5:30pm, I realised that it was the elevators.

I called down to the front desk and they promptly moved me...to a room at the back corner which smelled like it had previously housed a smoker. You're not allowed to smoke in the rooms, sure. But someone who smokes like a chimney had inhabited that room not too long ago, and I could smell it.

I called down to the front desk, they sent up housekeeping, who sprayed perfume through the room. Not helping! And then they moved me yet again - about four rooms along and there's no smell and no elevator rumble...

What a drama. And I'd slept pretty well last night. It was just during the day that I was listening to that rumble and thought at first it must be construction work, only to realise after hours that, no, it's probably the elevators.

Bad design, as my dad the architect would say.

At any rate, I'm moved again.

NOW can the drama be over? Please? Pretty please?

I'm feeling better still - more energy, but the slightly congested nose and throat again. I stopped taking the phenylephrine after last night. And looking through the drugs the doc gave me, there's an anti-histamine, and an anti-inflammatory, and when I tried taking the metformin (another anti-inflammatory) last night...let's just say it got unpretty.

Tonight and tomorrow is to make sure I'm back to (near-)fighting fit. I should have been in Georgia, by now, meeting the rest of the tour...

*sigh* Okay, no dwelling. Just resting.

5) Due to foot problems I can't walk much anymore but just a few days ago took a stroll to our mailbox center and was reminded of how a visiting friend said that she was so struck by the quiet of our apartment. And it wasn't that early, but I could hear the slap of my shoes on the pavement, the scratch of the squirrels chasing one another around a tree, crickets and birds chirping in the trees, and the wind rustling through the corn.

We aren't in the middle of nowhere. I also heard a train whistling a mile away, and if one listened closely the whoosh of cars on the nearby interstate was clear, as are planes and helicopters that pass overhead from time to time. But it was a wonderfully peaceful 10 minutes where everything outdoors felt very close and calm.

shelter in place

I've found somewhere to stay for the next three days and moved there.

there was a bit of drama )

Hopefully this marks the end of the change-in-programming part of my trip.

I mean, I've done this before. I've worn it and managed it. But it puts me off. And with my health in the mix, I'm anxious. And tired.

I need to have something to eat. Take my medication, and go to bed. Friday and Saturday await, and at least I'm somewhere I don't feel guilty about being in someone else's space (where I was before, although she was very nice about me being sick).

Two things

I'm not recovered from going out last week, but hopefully I will be soon, or at least before I have to go out again next week. Anyway, two fannish things:

1. People may remember a few Yuletides ago, I wrote We'll Burn That Barn When We Come To It, aka the first Harold/William the Conqueror fic on the archive (how???)* because a) Irresistable Request and b) childhood obsession with all things 1066.

Anyway, the BBC have made a big epic about William and Harold! I have tried 10 minutes and so far it seems decent and though it did the standard opening with Grimness, just to show it was that kind of thing, it was all right & I liked everything else so far, so yay. As far as I know, the last time the BBC did a thing about William the Conqueror, it was the 60s and it had Julian Glover in so never in my lifetime, omg. Don't let us down...

(I was wary and slow to start it because ill and also the preview made it look a lot like The Last Kingdom, which was too much for me, although tbf to TLK, I hear it got more interesting as it went, but I was there for Matthew Macfadyen and then they killed him in the first episode and I was too ill for all the Vikings. Matthew Macfadyen led me to Spooks after being great in v different ways in a small role in Enigma and as Felix in The Way We Live Now, but he has worked hard to stop me ever since Tom Quinn walked into the sea, damn him.)

The BBC have apparently paid attention to historical detail like the size of the ponies but somehow missed the fact that the one thing we can all see in the Bayeaux Tapestry is that the Anglo-Saxons have epic moustaches and the Normans are clean-shaven by deciding to give all the Normans moustaches and have the Anglo-Saxons clean-shaven, but you can't have the French wandering around without a proper goatee to show they're French, sacre bleu etc.

Matilda and William just mentioned Emma of Normandy in a way that suggests she should be Significant, so I got v excited. I await her actual appearance with anticipation. \o/

(Someone has already dropped a fresh kudos on my fic, because there are still only 3 William/Harold works in the world. I look forward to it becoming a tiresome large-sized vessel soon, as Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is playing William, so that should bring some people in, right?)

2. I just found that [personal profile] daibhidc wrote a really great Miss Marple ficlet based on my Miss Marple is a goddess fic (talking of Yuletide hits of yore), which brightened up the week no end:

Nemesis the Virgin (614 words) by DaibhidC
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Miss Marple - Agatha Christie
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jane Marple
Additional Tags: Historical, Anglo-Saxon, Miss Marple is a Goddess
Summary: An Anglo-Saxon priest has a strange encounter with a parishoner.

(We are TECHNICALLY on Ro3 for Goddess Jane Marple now, except one of those is a translation of my work so it doesn't really count. Hmm...)

I shall stop typing now because I am still not really up to it, but lo a post, a positive post. With 1066-ness and Miss Marple in it!

yeah, nup

It's COVID.

Took a RAT, saw a doc and got a medical certificate written and some medication to treat the symptoms - they don't have free antivirals as of six months ago, dammit.

I'm vaxxed up to JN.1 (whatever the most recent version is) and that's good, because it hopefully means it'll be mild. But it still sucks.

Still trying to work out what I need to collect on the travel insurance for medical situation causing disruption to travel plans.

Probably a PCR and that's going to be the tricky part around here.

--

Had taste and smell (well, relatively, other than blocked nose) up to this afternoon. Mostly I'm feeling fluey - and tired.

--

Things I did not need: the eastern european friend who has a tendency to be upbeatedly-depressing telling me she hopes I don't get Long COVID like she did 8 weeks after she got COVID... I mean, I hope I don't, too, but I didn't need something else to think about...

sick while travelling

Ugh. Alas, for I have caught a bug. Virus. Thingy. Whatever.

Runny nose, blocked ears, exhaustion, sore throat.

Luckily, I had some antibiotics to take for it, so that's made things a little easier, but I suspect it's one of those longer-running, harder-hitting viruses.

Going to ask the halfbro for thoughts on a medical centre that I could maybe get seen by a doc and possibly get some stronger antibiotics? Also take a test, in case what I have is one of the worrying ones.

Probably doesn't help that I'm in Hong Kong (and was in Singapore) where it's very hot and humid, and so I start sweating like crayz when I'm not standing in a breeze. I mean, that was likely anyway, but the feeling of my eyes and nose and ears and sinuses all being stuffed up is not fun.

I'm also vaguely worried about the next leg of the trip which is two booked tours where they'll exclude me if I'm not healthy.

So, mostly rest while here in HK. That's the plan. It's just hard because it's so hot and blech and no respite. But the air con wasn't great in Singapore - it just felt cold and hard and sharp in my throat. So what with one thing and another, it's all a bit much.

I've been sick while traveling before - ironically, I was also on a tour that time. But it was pre-covid and people didn't worry quite so much about pandemics.

I've been vaxxed - covid 6 months ago, and flu more recently - but it's just the stuffiness that's not feeling great right now.

Recs: RMSE & Casefic Exchange

I've had a chill long weekend with few obligations (!!), so had the chance to bask in recent reveals from two exchanges that I didn't sign up for this year: [community profile] raremaleslashex and [community profile] caseficexchange. Here are some of the works I enjoyed! (All works still anonymous!)

Casefic recs

Bigpaw Walks Among Us (fic)
Bunnicula series - James Howe, ensemble, 9391 words, rated general audience
omg, this was a gem! A perfect extension of the books, charming, goofy, and fun. The animals set out to solve the mystery of Bigpaw, with schemes, hijinks, and puns.

Paw and Order: The Absent Author (fic)
due South, Fraser & Ray K & Diefenbaker, 4269 words, rated general audience
This is so cute, charming, and fun, a cozy mystery wrapped up in typical dS quirky magical realism. Plus silliness with dogs!!

Love This Face (Love the Person Wearing It) (fic)
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Edgin/Xenk, Edgin & Holga, 6332 words, rated teen
A great casefic where Edgin & Holga follow a lead on a monster, and Xenk shows up tracking the same thing. Nicely paced plot, solid characterization, and great simmering chemistry between Edgin/Xenk.

who hosts house parties on a monday (fic)
Legends of Tomorrow, Zari 1.0/Ray Palmer, 5083 words, rated teen
A cute and fun undercover-as-a-couple mission fic, with canon-typical Legends shenanigans! A great caper, super fun.

[Minicomic] Retrofit (comic)
Original Work, Female Veteran Battle Android turned Private Investigator, rated teen
Loved this character design! Such a cool combo of cyberpunk and noir, and great use of a limited colour palette.

RMSE recs

Anything but Equinox (fic)
Brilliant Minds, Josh Nichols/Oliver Wolf, 4501 words, rated teen
A fantastic post-S1 take on the tension, reservations, and reconciliation between Josh and Oliver. Lovely characterization and sharp dialogue - really loved this.

galeocerdo (fic)
Jaws movies, Martin Brody/Matt Hooper, 1442 words, rated mature
Loved the intensity of this! Matt uses a blowjob to get Brody to go back out onto the boat. Excellent stuff.

All Ears (art)
Star Trek DS9, Jake Sisko/Nog, rated teen
Aww, art of a soft and intimate oo-mox scene!

sweat and water and Singapore and food

Sometimes I feel like I am the only person in the world who fills up on water, however temporarily.

Right now, I'm sitting at a table with an entire bottle of sparkling water, and I'm not going to manage to drink it all in one sitting.

Singapore has been beautiful, but also tiring and hot. I have mostly stayed in the hotel, where my room has an absolutely ridiculous view. With the exception of today, when I went out to meet a friend and we walked through 30C heat-and-humidity, fit to broil me in sweat. I was sincerely slick across the skin by the time we reached the place we were going to lunch.

I'm happy to report that Singapore isn't entirely given over to the modern, flash, and fancy. In a little street of restaurants and bars, we found a place that doesnt look like it's changed its decor since the eighties. And I don't mean bright and tawdry neon; I mean lino floors, melamine tables, and the old 'Chinese' paintings and ideographs on the walls, framed beneath glass.

Chin-Chin runs a brisk and cheap business with an extremely simple menu - the height of the 'if you're good at it, ride that train all the way down'. That said, most westerners wouldn't dare eat there for fear of food poisoning - it's got that look about it. Although honestly those places generally have the best food. We had a meal for two, it was filling, and it cost about the same as one meal would have cost elsewhere. Which, on this street where the buildings look like they were built during Singapore's early years of colonisation by the British - complete with wooden shutters - probably means they own the shop and space outright. Because the rent on that street would be absolutely RUINOUS.

Granted, to get there, we had to emerge from the modern, flash, and fancy shopping centres that...sincerely? Look like something straight ouf the Australian 00s (possibly the American 90s) - bling and lights and colours and EVERYTHING IS FOR SALE.

UGH.

Anyway, it's been an excellent couple of days. Even if I've been battling this damned virus. That, or the air-conditioners are drying out my throat something ferocious.

Tomorrow, I wake early and fly to Hong Kong where I will be seeing my half-brother and the niecelets.

And dealing with Dad, who I suspect has an "offer" of a business proposition.

And I am busily reminding myself it is not up to children to fulfil their parents' dreams.

[personal profile] ysilme here: between catching up on sleep after a bad night and tiring garden work, only a few new lines for the backstory turned own story.

[personal profile] sylvanwitch here: We had friends from out of town visit today, so I've only just sat down with the novel. Yesterday, I took a whole incident out because its purpose was better served by a later incident, so now I'm doing the finicky stuff of finding other references to the now non-existent incident and revising. I'll get back to the regular chapter editing once I've cleared this up.

[personal profile] ysilme here: The surprise NPC demanded yet more backstory to be written down, to a point where it's becoming its own story. About 200 words for that.

[personal profile] sylvanwitch here: I had today off but a bit of adulting to do (after which, I hit up a rummage sale and got to take a long walk in a park I haven’t been to in a long while), but before I left for my appointment, I edited a bit of the novel.

Some Encouraging Signs

1) Too long ago now, I shared some DS9 related meta posts at [community profile] meta_warehouse and found that I was interested in the suggestions about older Trek being more character oriented than newer Trek shows. Although the post involved DS9 and Discovery, if we look at Star Trek Enterprise versus Discovery, "bad writing" doesn't cover it all. Read more... )

2) In Germany, news readers asked to identify AI created news often couldn't, and were more likely to stay subscribed. (You can test yourself on some of the samples at the link)

3) Watched another season of Silent Witness and came to a realization about why I took to Clarissa so quickly. Read more... )

4) I have yet to get back to Boston Legal, interrupted as I was by new subscriptions, shows returning, etc. But I had left myself some notes about something I still think is worth mentioning even if I don't develop this out into a longer essay.

I was struck by the way political issues were engaged with in shows taking place in the 1990s vs 2000s. Read more... )

5) Encouraging news about the Briet startup which aims to make digital books ownable by libraries instead of the hamstringing rental agreements they now have to contend with. I hope it succeeds and grows.
